How long will it last?
Most ice sculptures have an indoor show life of about six hours. This means that at room temperature, it will take that long for the detail to “soften”. However, your entire sculpture will remain for many hours beyond that. Please call to discuss outdoor display options and show life.
How are they made?
All of our sculptures are hand-carved without the use of molds. Our sculptures begin with 300lb. crystal clear Clinebell ice blocks that we manufacture ourselves. The blocks measure 40” x 20” x 10” and are made to be long lasting. Because we make our own blocks, we are also able to freeze into your sculpture fresh flowers, photos or other objects.

Start to finish (1 of 14)
1.) We make our own 300 lb. carving blocks in our studio. We use Clinebell brand block making machines which make the very highest quality crystal clear blocks. First, they are lined with heavy-duty plastic liners and secured.
Why the ice is so clear (2 of 14)
The liner is filled with water and an aerating pump is attached. The pump keeps the impurities and air bubbles out, creating a crystal clear and longer lasting ice sculpture. The blocks freeze from the bottom up. During the 4 day process, items can be frozen into the block, such as flowers, hoses for shooters, etc.
Harvesting the blocks (3 of 14)
After about 4 days, excess water is wet-vacuumed off the top, the pump is removed and the blocks are lifted out with a hoist and bar that attaches to metal plates frozen in the block. The liner is peeled off and the metal plates chipped off with an ice pick. The block can then be transferred to the freezer.
Crystal Clear (4 of 14)
Before Steve can begin to carve, the blocks must be tempered for a few hours. The Clinebell blocks are so clear you can see through them like glass!
Crankin Up the Chain Saw (5 of 14)
Before he starts each sculpture, Steve carves two grooves in the bottom of the block, for easier lifting when the sculpture is set up on location.
Sketching the design (6 of 14)
The design is first sketched out with an ice pick by hand. Here, Steve is sketching out the start of a heart & doves sculpture.
Taking away what isn’t the sculpture! (7 of 14)
He then removes the excess ice from the design, cutting with a chainsaw at the outer edges.
a cold heart! (8 of 14)
The center of the heart is removed and further definition is created with a sharp flat blade chisel.

The Details (10 of 14)
A “V” bit is used with the grinder to add detailed line cuts to the heart. All of these detailed lines are enhanced by illumination.
the finishing touches (11 of 14)
Steve details the doves, using a straight tip on the grinder. The finishing touches are added and the sculpture is brushed and hosed down for clarity.

Do you deliver?
We arrive approximately an hour prior to your event and provide complete setup in an attractive display pan with a drain system. We deliver to any location throughout Hampton Roads, the Richmond and DC areas, to the Blue Ridge, Charlottesville, Williamsburg, the Outer Banks and north eastern North Carolina. Delivery charges vary. There is a fee for breakdown and removal at the end of the event.
What about lighting my sculpture?
We highly recommend lighting. It adds a beautiful glow to the sculpture while defining and highlighting the detail for that “wow” effect at first sight! We can illuminate your design with clear or colored lighting to match your theme or décor.
How do I choose my sculpture?
You may select from our portfolio of hundreds of designs by personal appointment at our shop. Or, if you prefer, you may simply e-mail your design, logo or photograph to Andrea in our sales office. An appointment isn’t always necessary-most of our sales are done over the phone and with email.
Steve and Andrea, what are your suggestions?
Your sculpture could be placed on a food table as the centerpiece to the buffet or as an integral part of your hors d’oeuvres display. We also offer shooter-type luge sculptures for the bar area, or an entire bar made of ice! What fun for your guests and surely a unique way to make your event more exciting!.
